Direction part 2.

The second brief I chose was Paradox.  Paradox 1. A seemingly contradictory statement that may nonetheless be true: the paradox that standing is more tiring than walking. 2. One exhibiting inexplicable or contradictory aspects. 3. An assertion that is essentially self-contradictory, though based on a valid deduction from acceptable premises. 4. A statement contrary to received opinion. It is something that seems illogical initially but somewhere in reality it could potentially be true. I started by researching and understanding some famous paradoxes specifically “all horses are the same colour.”

So I started to think of paradoxes in everyday life.. which got me to come up with the idea that:
slide_9 Initially you would say that this is untrue and you could undoubtedly argue that this is pretty illogical. We all know that everyone’s favourite colour is not red.
Hypothetically though this could be entirely plausible, because there is no way to know or see how other people perceive colours in their minds eye. In theory this would be impossible to prove but to put it simply the way that I see MY red may just be the way that you see MY purple. I started to morph a little into the synesthesia brief around this time. So, to demonstrate this graphically I did some experiments by asking people what their favourite colours were out of a list of 11 colours. I asked them to label 1-11; 1 being most favourable and 11 being the least. colours

The posters showed some interesting views between similarities and differences with their perceptions of which colours were favored and which were not.slide_11

To get away from colours I wanted to focus more on perception. Everyone has a different view on the world around them and just how people perceive it is entirely dependent on a broad range of variables.

So I drew up some common drawings just to test people on their initial reactions and perceptions to the images they were shown. I wanted to know what they saw initially and what they saw upon examining the image further.
slide_12After this experiment I wanted to see how preconceived perceptions effect someones performance.
Do changes or alterations in original perceptions enhance or deter the subject?
So I made a deck of cards but reversed the colours of the suits making:
hearts black
diamonds black
clubs red
& spades red.
slide_13What this experiment ended up showing was a slower reaction time in peoples’ perceptions while playing a game. They had previously been exposed to seeing something a certain way and an alteration in this confused a subconscious reaction.
ace

The idea of devices or tools used to enhance or manipulate perceptions/understanding is very intriguing to me, and although this was mostly design through experimentation I find the idea of machines for perceiving very interesting and would like to expand on this further through continuing experimentation methods.

I thought I would post some key points from the presentations on friday and establish my new direction for the next week or so.
Initially with the “what are you doing, Dave?”  brief I wanted to look at the relationship specifically between Generation-Y and Technology. We casually socialise and communicate through text messages, instant messenger, email and video chat applications such as skype, webcam, ichat and more.
This got me thinking about how personal or impersonal this socialising may be and how human contact is lacking.
This then brought me to the physical human contact and intimacy in interaction such as hugging, touch, holding hands, kissing etc. So I experimented with simulating the feeling of holding hands.glove1This originally was going to be a device that you could plug in and utilise while video chatting as if you were holding someones hand across a distance if you couldnt be with them physically.
But then I wanted to move away from the physical constraints of the computer entirely and go “unplugged”
I wanted something that could be utilised anywhere and was easily accessible through everyday means. So again, human touch came into play and i was thinking about what it is like for someone to grab your attentions through touch, for example when someone reaches out and touches or holds your arm. I wanted this device to be something that could be triggered or initiated through texting.
Instead of vibrating or signaling an audio sound I wanted this to give you a squeeze or a hold. So I made this band prototype that when you receive a text message the band that you wear around your arm is simultaneously inflated by CO2 cartridges resulting in a light squeeze. The message or squeeze could be anonymous and purely for the thoughtful gesture that someone is thinking of you.frontband

The relationship between technology and humans is becoming increasingly unclear as we rely more and more on their presence. Explore the positive and negative aspects of these relationships; Natural dependencies, failures, rejections, reservations and concerns as well as enjoyment, fond feelings and even passion. Consider what technology can give us as well as take away.

Design something to extend, narrow, or mediate the relationship humans have with technology.

Generation Y and our relationship with technology:
Communication- Email, SMS, Instant Messenger, Video Chat

How do we manage and retain knowledge through such mediums?
Isn’t it impersonal?

“Technology is the new social lubricant”
-makes it easier
-instant gratification
-always connected
-used to nourish relationships

Generation Y- Impatience
-working for our goals?
-final outcomes or rewards
-literacy
-individualism
-immediacy
-social interactivity

Does technology enable humans to have animal like senses?
Are we trying to separate more from man/beast
or are we only becoming more beast like
extreme senses or lack of compassion?

After the brainstorming I started to think about my personal attachments and dependencies with technology which one particular instance stood out in my mind. This being when I was in the hospital last year with appendicitis thousands of miles away from my family and the only thing I really wanted to be able to do was to have some sort of physical contact with my mom. This brought me to holding hands. What does holding hands offer? Connection, affection, protection, comfort and endearment. It remains a sign of intimacy between friends, lovers, couples and family. It keeps two people together as they navigate the world around them. I kind of wanted to show and simulate the extremities between human to human contact and human to technology contact.

This then brought me to social interaction through technology and generation-Y in particular.

more exploration and making to follow.

What now?

So I’ve finished up at Tank for the time being. I will probably go back for a bit before the end of summer but now what do I do? I suppose another internship is in line but I think I’d like to wait again and actually have a little bit of fun. I realised how exhausted I actually was this morning when I couldn’t remember getting into bed at all last night completely dressed as well. Well.. I’d like to organize some camping or something along those lines in the next few weeks.. take a break from our laptops and such.. anyone up for that?

I was talking to Jennie the other day for the first time in too long when I was reminded of some of the things we used to find funny in high school, such as the Jimmy Hoffa line in Ghost, or Willy Lopez falling down some stairs…HissQuack Fusion etc.. none of this will make sense to anyone other than us and a select few.. but I had completely forgotten all about this little gem..
