Births, Marriages & Deaths

Death Cam

This project engages with three events that need social certification. The project explores and develops design potentials around the socio-cultural effects surrounding birth, death and marriage. Births, Marriages and Deaths started out as a one week group film project where we were able to isolate one specific area amongst birth, marriage or death. The route our group decided to take was concentrated on death and the ceremonies and rituals that are observed after the moment of expiration up until burial. We juxtaposed modern western culture ceremonies to that of the African Bakweri tribe of Cameroon.

Following the one week group project our individual projects developed. After learning and paying particular attention to the burial process I became intrigued by the concepts of afterlife and the what ifs. This was the starting point behind the development of the Death Cam.

The Death Cam is a recording device used to monitor and track the exact moment of death, using  EEC and EKG electrodes programmed and connected directly to a cameras flash response. The device works in that when the arduino program which is connected to the electrode receptors stop receiving a signal from the subject it sends a message to the camera resulting in the camera flash, producing a documented photo of the exact moment of death.
