The Anti-Social

Reverse Voyeurism

This project is concerned with society, community and civil obedience through an investigation into the Anti-social. In observing Featherstone Street near Old Street Station in London I encountered some peculiar anti-social behavior. I could not help but notice the area is set up very much like an outside arena. High rise flats surround a seating area located just below ground level. It is almost as if the mood is set for observing or viewing in some sort of fashion.  The area has a dialogue suggesting an attempt to make the area more social, yet it seems that this is not taken advantage of.

I found an overwhelming sensation of being watched and could not help but feel uncomfortable while in the area. The space itself seemed to be emitting an anti-social vibe.

This sensation of being watched stuck with me and helped create the illusion of voyeurism between the seating area and the high rise flats. In an attempt to make the location seem less uninviting I wanted to promote it with the anti-social behavior act itself. In order to try to accomplish this social experiment I set up ‘observing devices’ along the road pointed discretly towards the flats to see how the public would respond.
